The Burnside store has been reorganized one more time. We wanted to get more vinyl into the store, so we moved the DVD movies over with rock and pop CDs and moved all the vinyl in with the jazz and classical stuff. We managed to make room for a few thousand more records, including more green tags (bargains). And, we opened the front doors to the original space, so you can enter on the CD side or the vinyl/jazz/classical side; checkout is on both sides as well.

Now, we're in the process of filing and alphabetizing more catalog vinyl and I'm culling through the boxes and boxes of old warehouse vinyl and bringing that into the new space ... with lots of interesting finds, like colored vinyl and promo Prince 12-inches. They're probably gone by now, but there will be more stuff coming the following weeks.

There is more work to be done so be patient and if you ever need help finding something, be sure to ask. Sometimes we can be surly and cranky, but usually we'll do whatever we can to assist you. Thanks.

April 16th is Record Store Day!!!

To celebrate we will give you a little taste of who is stopping by our stores...

The downtown store has many things going on throughout the day! Be sure to stop by to see the Hosannas do an instore set at 130pm!

At 2pm we have the lovely Zia Mccabe of the Dandy Warhols doing her DJ set for the second year in a row, and as an extra treat, her band Brush Prairie will be doing an instore set at 3pm!

We are super excited to have Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside doing an instore! They have a set time starting at 4pm that is not to be missed!!!

One of my favorite bands is doing a Dj set at 5pm. Stop by to see what the Nurses will play!

At 6pm we have a DJ set by another amazing band, White Hinterland...

Closing out the day will be an amazing DJ set by the band Ancient Heat! Check out this video and come by at 6pm for what is sure to be an awesome listen....

At the Sandy store we will once again have Steve Turner of Mudhoney coming by to do a DJ set, which was one of the employee faves of last year...

And at 4pm, one of Portlands funnest bands around, Purple and Green will do an instore....

Beautiful New Glass Sonata

Think you know Philip Glass? Check out his newest Sonata for violin and piano which has just been recorded by Maria Bachmann for her new disc "Glass Heart," which was just released on Orange Mountain Music (Glass's label)! The new sonata is a sweeping, dramatic work with lots of dynamic spirit and emotional breadth. Perhaps more akin to works by Schubert than Steve Reich and not as heavy on the repetition as one might expect, the new sonata is a fantastic way to introduce oneself to Glass or a great way to reinvigorate your love for his music. Bill Frisell graced the store with his presence on a rainy night in Portland. He played an incredible set, took requests, signed autographs, and took pictures with anyone who asked (and a lot of people asked). He is truly an amazing artist, and a very kind person. We here at E.M. have the upmost respect for any artist who takes the time out to help a local independent record store increase traffic and visibility for the business. If you are a Grind/Powerviolence/Fastcore/Thrash fan and haven't checked out THIS COMP KILLS FASCISTS VOL.2 yet...well, you should. IT KILLS. Clocking in over 70 minutes, this CD features a whole bunch of incredible bands that define where this scene is heading.

I may be biased, because my super-close Boise bros, Hummingbird of Death, are featured on this comp. But so are Portland's very own, Superbad.

(I love this compilation, and I'm pissed because my copy was jacked when my Jeep was broken into last month.)

I’m helping my buddy Gabe with his Senior short film this weekend. It’s called “Escolta”. The next 3 days will be spent south of Burns, OR, where not much grows besides juniper and sagebrush. It will be a complete Bro-Fest,though, and I'm personally going to make sure we gots some great tunes.

Anyway, here are the 5 most important albums to ensure a good time for this one:

5. Blue Cheer-Vincebus Eruptum. There’s only one way to listen to this classic made by one of the original power trios from the 60s. Crank the volume up! It’s gonna be loud!

4. Hawkwind-Space Ritual. I have a feeling it’s going to get weird out there, so I might as well beat it to the punch. Hawkwind invented space rock, and this double disc is their swansong. It’s a total trip-out adventure from start to finish. Don't try to understand it, just like it.

3. Electric Wizard-Dopethrone. This British doom metal band made the perfect soundtrack for when you just can’t turn the damn heat off. This one feels like you could bake a meatloaf on a picnic table just by pushing play. It’s “Sweetleaf” slowed down, and it's HEAVY… HEAVY… HEAVY. Be forewarned… and be patient. (and don’t do drugs, kids.)

2. Tabla Beat Science-After enduring that last pick, I think I’ll probably need to chill-out a bit to some eastern-influenced electronica, featuring the prolific Bill Laswell and tabla master Zakir Hussain. It should be good for an epic sunset.

And…

1. The Stooges-Funhouse. What better album is there to rally to after a long, hot day of shooting footage of 2 dudes pulling a handcart, than Iggy and Co.’s infamous! OWWW! Anyone wanna shotgun a PBR?

He had an awesome d.j. set, and here we are a few months later, eagerly anticipating the release of their new album "Mines". Great album artwork, and our stores will have it on sale. we had the pleasure of hosting an awesome instore with local favorite band the Builders and Butchers. It was an awesome set, made even better by our friends at Black Sheep Bakery and Voodoo Doughnuts both of whom donated treats to support us and the band. They played to a packed store. I've attached some pictures so you can all get the feel of the fun time had by both our customers, and the staff.
